Swimming has obviously been captivating.
Our jaws dropped when we watched Usain "Lightning" Bolt smoke the competition in the 100 meter. And do you know what he had for breakfast and lunch that day? Chicken McNuggets! I'm sure McDonald's has a new ad campaign already on the drawing board.
I love, love, love synchronized swimming. I can't explain it, and I seem to be the only one who feels this way. Whenever I confess my love of the sport, I am met with blank, blinking stares.
And finally gymnastics is a perennial favorite. Everyone can agree on that. Just like so many other women, I can remember watching the limber girls in my living room when I was little. I'm not old enough to remember when Nadia Comaneci scored her perfect 10 in 1976.
But in 1984, I did get to stay up extra late to watch "Nadia," the movie. I was mesmerized.
When I watched the floor exercises that year, I turned my head away from the television just long enough to tell my parents, "I want to be in the Olympics!"
They replied, "Well, you'll have to work really really hard."
Me: "OK!"
And then it was never discussed again.
Ahhh...what could have been.
31 year old gymnasts, 41 year old swimmers, we still have a chance! ;)
ReplyDeleteI watched that movie, too! I still remember parts of it- like how Nadia would practice with bloody hands (hey, that was traumatizing to a 10 year old me!) and that she didn't want to do the hand motions on the beam.
