A rare and special moment

There is no way I can fully describe what we were lucky enough to witness last night.

Because it was free (got tickets through KMUW) and because it was my birthday, Kevin and I went to see The David Mayfield Parade last night.

I had no idea what to expect and I was even concerned about getting stuck there listening to something I hated.

The complete and total opposite happened.

Amazing is what happened.

The concert was part of the Kansas Acoustic Arts Association winter concert series, and there were a total of three acts playing with Mayfield as the headliner.

The second group was Carrie Nation and the Speakeasy, which is a very popular (and good) local band. It seems many of the people in attendance may have been there just to see them, which is fine, except by leaving early they missed out on something special.

A performance I will never forget. A performance that will be recounted for years.

I don't know how many people were left in the venue for the closing the number, maybe 30.

Mayfield and the members of his group came down off the stage and stood on the dance floor. He summoned all of us out of our seats to form a circle around them.

Mayfield had his guitar and the others had their voices.

Then they sang this just two feet in front of us:

It was ridiculous.

It was beautiful.

It made me cry.

And then I got to shake his hand afterward and tell him how much I enjoyed his performance.

What a day.
